Thinks Local, Drink Local. I really love a good beer -I especially like a local handcrafted specialty beer. Here’s a profile of the local breweries Located in Durham.
Triangle Brewing Co. located at 918 Pearl St. in Durham
According the purveyors of TBC, Rick “the Brewer” Tufts and Andy “the Bloke” Miller, the “Triangle Brewing” idea, though nameless at the time, was hatched in the mid 90s. Rick and Andy are Connecticut transplants and mates from high school. The brewery itself is one piece of the growing downtown Durham renaissance. The stated goal of TBC is to produce balanced, full-flavored, yet highly drinkable Belgian and American style ales. These guys stick to the four basic beer making ingredient, but do it with style. TBC flagship ale the “Triangle Belgian-Style Strong Golden Ale can be found in bottles at a few select stores, but on tap in many local watering holes. By far the easiest way to get your hands on some of TBC beer is to drive up to the door and pick it up. TBC offers a keg rent and return service to ensure the locals never go thirsty.
Fullsteam Brewery located at 726 Rigsbee Avenue in Durham
At the writing of this post Fullsteam is 4 months away from its mid-February launch. Fullsteam Brewery is the brain child of Chris Davis, a scientist and beer-genius, and Sean Wilson, a Triangle business veteran. Fullsteam gets its name from its brewing technique for a Steam beer, which uses lager yeast to ferment at ale temperatures. This upstart is telling a beer story in a whole new way. Imagine the South was the center of beer creation and distribution? What might you find in your brew? A sweat potato perhaps or maybe Kudzu (don’t worry I didn’t know what this was either) or rhubarb perhaps. These guys are turning tradition on it head and expect to be known for their innovations. As of today you can’t actually buy any Fullsteam beer but the day is fast approaching when you’ll be able to belly up to bar right in the Fullsteam Brewery. Fullsteam R&D will keep all the beers on tap for you to enjoy with a savory meat pie.
